Obituary

Verners Voldemars Marauskis

Born 10/9/33 in Riga, Latvia, Vern immigrated to the United States in 1950 with his parents Julius and Olga. He spent 10 years during WWII in displaced persons camps in Nuremberg and Berlin, Germany. He was very quiet about this time in his life. For Vern, life started a new chapter after immigrating to the United States. He was very proud to live in this country, serving in the U.S Army Tank Corps and ultimately becoming a U.S Citizen.

His early years were spent in Green Bay where his family was sponsored by the Bogda family and the Union Congregational Church. On September 15, 1956, he married his first wife Gloria Breth and they had a daughter, Julie.

He held several jobs in his lifetime. He left Green Bay in 1960 and moved to the West Coast settling in Palm Springs where he worked for Avis Rent-a-Car. Then he worked for Standard Oil which took him to Seattle. It was while he was working for Standard Oil that he met his second wife Marilyn Peterson (Harnden). They married on November 5, 1970 and shortly thereafter, he adopted her daughter Sandra.

After Standard Oil, Vern and his partners formed American Cascade and sold auto parts in the tri-state area. Upon his departure from American Cascade, he got his real estate license, and in his later years worked as a security guard for Seattle Power and Light until his health forced him to retire in 2009.

Vern was loved by all that met him. Marilyn and he were members of Arbor Heights Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He is fondly remembered there as the "candy man". The young kids at church always knew that he had candy in his pockets to pass out to them on Sunday mornings. Vern also loved to joke and tease and got along with everyone. He was a loving father, grandfather and friend.

Vern passed away November 15th due to complications of bladder cancer. He is preceded in death by wife Marilyn and sister, Astrida. Vern is survived by daughters Julie (Mike) Dallaire and Sandra (Geoff) Shook as well as grandchildren Clarisa, Noel and Morgan.

Memorial service to be held December 1st at 1pm at Arbor Heights Community Church, 4113 SW 102nd Street, Seattle. Dessert reception to follow service.
