Obituary

Thomas Grant Smith passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13th, 2015. He was born on September 22nd, 1922 to Ralph E. and Elizabeth (Weiss) Smith in Lewistown, Montana.

Tom's childhood was a "Norman Rockwell" story of fishing trips, escapades with cars, and loving family fun. Tom was proud to have worked in the Conservation Corp planting trees during his teenage years. After high school, he enlisted in the US Navy, and continued his love of boxing, winning the Pacific Fleet Golden Glove Championship. Tom was stationed in Pearl Harbor in December 1941, witnessing the Japanese attack and putting himself at risk to join the rescue efforts that ensued. During World War II, he was stationed on the USS Rigel, USS Henderson and USS Dixie, visiting exotic places worldwide, including Australia and New Zealand, which he enjoyed very much. After six years in Naval service, he became a US Merchant Marine, stationed out of Seattle and San Francisco, where he continued to sail to Japan and Alaska, among other places. Tom returned to the Seattle area where he met his wife of 59 years, Marilyn June Gray.

Tom and Marilyn settled in Shoreline, WA to raise a family of four boys. Tom was employed at the Chevron Refinery in Richmond Beach for 30 years, working as an asphalt pumper. Tom was a lot of fun to be around. His nieces and nephews claimed him to be their "favorite" Uncle. Their family spent their summers swimming, fishing, and traveling back to visit family in Montana.

Tom retired in 1987, and he and Marilyn moved to Arlington, WA to build a new home on lots of land. Tom enjoyed his retirement years traveling with Marilyn, enjoying many trips to Hawaii and an Alaskan Cruise. He cherished spending time with his family, enjoying his grandkids, and being active outside planting fruit trees and berries in their field. In his final years he was happiest with a grandkid in his lap, and his dog by his side.

Tom is survived by his wife Marilyn; his sister Betty Neal; his four sons Tom Smith, Jeff (Holly) Smith, Philip (Linda) Smith, and Glenn (Robin) Smith; and his 7 grandchildren, Zachary, Joel, Grant, Lauren, Chandler, Logan and Teagan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Emmett Smith, sister-in-law Tiny (Mary Louise) Smith, and brother-in-law Wayne Neal.

A Military Service for his internment will be held at the Anderson Cemetery in Stanwood, WA, on Saturday, March 28th at 1:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of his Life at the American Legion, Post 92, 26921 88th Avenue NW, in Stanwood.

Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor and friend, and everyone who knew him was truly blessed.

Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood, WA.
