KEEP ON "GILLNETTING"
Terry, 75, passed away Monday afternoon, April 20, 2015 at Harborview Medical Center after surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurism.
Born to Judith Marie Nelson and Felix Edmund McKean on Dec. 11, 1939 at Rowley General Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA, he would eventually be the middle son of four other brothers.
Terry had a very strong work ethic, picking strawberries at an early age, working hard on the family farm, as well as other farms in the area. As he got older, he worked at a couple of local grocery stores, Allen's Grocery and Cook's Serv-U, along with hours at Maynard Larson's Shell Station.
He graduated from Twin City High in 1958.
He was in the grocery industry for over 40 years, earning numerous awards and "Manager of the Year" on several occasions, within the family of stores under the banner of Thrifty Foods including Mark-It Foods, then Mark-It Place.
While moving up in the grocery world, he was also pursuing his dream of commercial fishing, here and in Alaska, mostly south of Ketchikan.
After retirement from groceries in 1996, he fished full summers up north with the help of his wife Joan, whom he lovingly called the "Skipper", just the two of them, the Full Crew!! Fall & winters were spent commercial crabbing. He really enjoyed it, especially when the pots were full of "Keepers".
Oh, then there are all the hunting stories, the huge elk, challenging deer, and oh, those flocks of ducks and geese; but you know, maybe another time, in another life.
Terry enjoyed working around our home, some traveling, sport crabbing and prawning, playing poker and pinochle, but most of all talking about his history from the Stanwood area.
He was predeceased by his parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
Survivors include his wife of 46 ½ years Joan; son Jeff; daughter Melissa; grandson Clint; grand-daughter Taylor; and great grand-daughter Kyleigh. Also four brothers Dale (Penny), Gary (Irmgard), Wayne (Chris), and Mike (Julie). Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and last, but not least, a host of valued friends.
There will be a "Celebration of Life" for Terry on May 16, 2015 at the Stanwood F.O.E. Eagles Club from 1-4pm. Terry's family would enjoy sharing special stories with all of you. Come and share remembrances.
Terry was a "Super-Awesome" Guy. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him!!! You were one hell of a "Deck-Boss".
Suggested Memorial donations to the Stanwood Eagles #3041 or Stanwood American Legion, Frank Hancock Pat 92.
Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
