Obituary

Shirley J. Bowers, 87, of Stanwood, WA died peacefully at her home near Sunday Lake on July 18, 2011. She was born July 15, 1924 in Fisher, Minnesota to Roy and Ferne (McCleary) Danielson.

Shirley moved to Bemidji, MN as a baby and grew up there, graduating from Bemidji High School in 1942. Because of WWII, she chose a career in nursing, graduating from nursing training at Deconess Hospital in Grand Forks ND in 1945. She worked as an Operating Room nurse in several hospitals throughout Minnesota until 1953 when she married John F. Bowers and moved to Palmer, Alaska. While in Alaska they lived in Palmer, Tanacross, Fairbanks, where daughter Debbie was born, and Anchorage, where son John was born. John and Shirley traveled to Portland OR, where daughter Julie was born, Duluth MN, and Billings MT for John's work as a forester with the BLM before settling in Stanwood WA in 1976. Shirley continued OR nursing at Cascade Valley Hospital and in 1980 began working for Dr. David Dunnington, MD as his office nurse, helping set up his new practice. Shirley retired from nursing in 1980 to care for husband John and daughter Julie who were diagnosed with cancer. In retirement, Shirley was an active participant in Eastern Star, the Stanwood/Camano Community Fair, volunteering at the 2nd Chance Thrift Store on Camano Island and the Women's Study Club of Stanwood. She loved traveling, crafting, knitting, sewing, as well as spending time with friends and family, all of whom will miss her deeply.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, and her sister Bonnie Whitson.

Shirley is survived by her daughters Julie Bowers, Stanwood WA, Debbie Bowers, Othello WA, son John (Lori) Bowers, Stanwood, sister Elizabeth Olson of Bemidji, MN, granddaughter Jessicia (Robb) Dickson,great granddaughter Seven as well as many other cousins nieces, nephews grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday July 23 at 10:00 AM at the Stanwood United Methodist Church.
