Obituary

Sandra was born June 19, 1944 to Robert Judson "Judd" and Catherine "Kaye" (Chamberlain) Quantrell of Detroit, Michigan. Known to her friends and family as Sandy, she was joined by two younger brothers whom she loved and looked after. As a girl of just six or seven years old, Sandy asked her parents if she could attend church. They agreed she could, but without crossing the street. Young Sandy made her way around the block to a church with a big cross in front that read "Jesus Saves." (She would discover as an adult that this was the church where many of her husband's extended family had attended.) Sandy would say that the Lord was holding her hand on those early treks to church, and she walked with Jesus all her life.

The summer before 6th grade, Sandy's family moved to Ferndale, a Detroit suburb, where she would attend Hazel Park Junior High and High Schools, keeping involved in youth groups and eventually finding a home at Ferndale Free Methodist Church. It was there, after graduation, that she met the summer pastoral intern who would become her husband. Roger and Sandy spent many hours ministering together that summer and falling in love. Fall would take her to Spring Arbor College while Roger finished seminary and the two kept up a legendary correspondence. As a young professor's wife, she also attended Greenville College and later graduated from Seattle Pacific College.

Sandy married Roger on August 15, 1964. The two partnered in life and ministry for nearly 58 years—exemplifying faithfulness to God and one another. Seven years into their marriage, while living in Ellensburg with their malamute dogs, Sandy was a sixth-grade teacher when Jonathan was born. The little family soon made their way back to the Midwest and Winona Lake, Indiana, welcoming baby Sara. Sandy kept home with two little ones and supported Roger's work in denominational publishing. These years held the gifts of proximity to parents and in-laws, church planting adventures, and lasting friendships. Anna and Julia also arrived while the family lived in Indiana—Sandy's heart and hands were full!

In 1980 the family moved west on another great adventure to the Seattle area. A few years later Sandy returned to education, working as a Confidential Secretary at Shoreline Community College. Sandy was still the primary caregiver for 4 school-age children and would say that she didn't even know how to use a computer when she applied at the college, but she quickly made herself invaluable. She was an excellent typist and she knew shorthand. More than that, she knew people. Sandy cared for coworkers and students alike in practical ways over her 21-year career. She especially enjoyed working in Student Services and supporting recent immigrants who were navigating the community college system. She could skillfully diffuse emotionally intense situations and put people of all ages at ease. Sandy treated everyone she met with kindness, dignity, and respect.

Retirement included years living off the grid in Leavenworth enjoying the natural environment, deep friendship with her Bible study group, and endless hospitality for those seeking respite among the mountains. Travels to Bolivia, Alaska, and Panama accented those years. Time with her grandchildren brought mutual joy—Grammy always had a special treat or toy in her purse to go with her wonderful hugs and unconditional love for them. After a stint in Wenatchee, Sandy and Roger came over the mountains again, settling into the Warm Beach Senior Community until Lewy Body Dementia necessitated Sandy's move to Fieldstone Memory Care in Marysville, June 2020.

On August 10, 2022, Sandra Schoenhals peacefully and gloriously passed into her eternal home, having been surrounded by family in prayer and worship. God granted clarity and recognition as she shared an earthly goodbye with each of her immediate family—one more testimony of Jesus' tender faithfulness throughout Sandy's life. She is survived by her devoted husband, George Roger; beloved children, Jonathan (Karin), Sara Schoenhals Martinez (Joe), Anna Schoenhals Kalepo (Tausili), and Julia Cohalan (Tim); cherished grandchildren Naomi, Josiah, Isla, and Eamon; admiring brothers Randy Quantrell (Linda) and Marty Quantrell (Ellen); and many other dearly loved ones.

A service and reception to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 in the afternoon, Sunday, August 21 at the Warm Beach Free Methodist Church, 20815 Marine Dr, Stanwood, WA 98292. For those inquiring about making a donation in Sandy's honor, please consider the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
