IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Dean
Hanson
June 2, 1936 – May 27, 2022
Robert D. "Mick" Hanson
On May 27, 2022, Robert D. "Mick" Hanson, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at age 85. He was devoted to his family, friends, and community.
Mick was born on June 2, 1936, in Arlington, Washington. He grew up in Everett and graduated from Everett High School in 1954. Mick (who went by "Bob" at the time) was active in sports. He was a proud member of the undefeated 1952 Seagulls state champion football team, which was recently inducted into the Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame. His experience in youth athletics made a deep impression on him.
In the late 1950s, Mick served in the Army in peacetime, stationed in Germany. After his return, he began working as an engineer for the Snohomish County PUD in Everett. He married Joan May in 1965, and they raised two sons, Brad and Jeff. The family moved to Stanwood in 1978, where Mick served as local manager of the PUD's Stanwood office until his 1993 retirement.
Mick had a positive impact on countless people. He believed athletic competition and sportsmanship taught kids valuable lessons. He coached youth football, basketball, and baseball for nearly twenty years; he was one of the founders and first president of the Stanwood-Camano Junior Athletic Association; and he was the first president of the Stanwood High School AAA Booster Club. Mick was a dedicated Stanwood Spartans fan, attending a vast number of Spartan boys and girls games over the years. In recognition of his contributions to local sports, he was a 2016 inductee to the Stanwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mick also served the Stanwood-Camano community in many other ways, devoting hundreds of volunteer hours and serving as an active member and president of the Kiwanis Club and as a member and president of the Stanwood School Board. Mick received multiple awards honoring his community service, including from the Washington PUD Association, Northwest Public Power Association, Washington Secondary Schools Athletic Administrator's Association, Stanwood High School, the City of Stanwood, and Everett Community College.
Mick was a devoted fan of the local teams, particularly the Seahawks, having been a faithful season ticket holder since the team's 1976 inaugural season. He was loyal even during the lean years, which likely would have come in handy for the coming season(s).
Mick loved people, his community, and especially his family and friends. They will dearly miss him, his generosity, his sense of humor, and the light he brought to all events and gatherings.
Mick is survived by Joan, his wife of nearly 57 years; sons Brad (Heidi) and Jeff (Jill); daughter Lynnette Anderson; grandsons Kyle and Karl; and granddaughters Claire and Ellie. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Stanwood.
