Nancy Holmes, 92, of Stanwood, passed away March 16, 2026. She was born in Seattle, Washington, to Oliver and Ella Gordon on February 2, 1934.
Nancy spent her childhood in Seattle and shared her summers with her favorite aunt and uncle in Sedro-Woolley. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1952, she attended the University of Washington, where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She graduated with a degree in sociology in 1955. While at the university, she met her future husband, John. They were married on July 2, 1955, in Seattle and shared 70 wonderful years together.
Immediately after their marriage, Nancy accompanied John during his two-year tour of duty in the Air Force, stationed in Lake Charles, Louisiana. In 1958, they returned to the Pacific Northwest, where John began his banking career, and they made their home in Stanwood. In 1959, Nancy and John welcomed their first son, John, followed by Scott and Lance.
Nancy devoted herself to raising her family as a full-time homemaker. She volunteered at school, church, after-school activities, and athletic events, and generously shared her time with her sons’ friends. She later created lasting family memories, sharing over 50 summers on Camano Island.
When her sons left for college, Nancy continued her service through the Swedish Hospital Auxiliary Board, where she served for several years, including her final years as President. Locally she spent time with the Stanwood Camano Food Bank. In later years, she cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her devotion to family, Nancy enjoyed volunteering and part-time work. She also loved reading, entertaining, travel and following her favorite sports teams.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, John; her children John Holmes (Shelley), Scott Holmes (Donna), and Lance Holmes (Kristi); her grandchildren Jack, Derek, Kurt, Dillon, Natalie, Jacob, and Kjell; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Woodrow.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Stanwood on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
