A Perfect Love
Marie Marlene Johnson passed away at her home on Camano Island of natural causes just three weeks before her 86th birthday. She was the oldest daughter of John and Erline Kautzman who raised their four children Marie, Peggy, Jack, and Bob in Everett during the late 1930's and 1940's. She graduated in 1947 from Everett High School after attending Perpetual Help and Holy Names Academy. Her youth was devoted to her siblings while her mother operated a restaurant near Hewitt and Broadway.
Marie met Vernon Johnson on a blind date while he attended the expanded E.C.C. on the G.I. Bill in 1947, and then married in June 1949. With resolve to further their educational opportunities, she supported Vern's University of Washington student years and presented their first-born son, Larry, in 1950 before his graduation with a BSME. Initially employed by Sumner Iron Works, they purchased their family home in 1951 in South Everett. Together, they raised eight children: Larry, Denise, Greg, Bryan, Sheri, and Leanne who reside nearby, and Glenn and Dale who preceded her in death.
Marie threw her many talents into active involvement with Children's Orthopedic Hospital Guild, PTA, Scouting, Campfire, and supporting Vernon's National Guard duties. Marie earned her nursing degree from Everett Community College's first nursing program in the 1960's starting a 40-year career leading through Providence, Ballard, and Swedish Hospitals. Retiring at age 68, she travelled extensively for 17 years. However, her pride and joy was the supportive family; the legacy she left is apparent in their dedication to education and service. Her exemplary life qualifies her for a ranking as our "Extraordinary Mother Superior!"
