December 2, 1939 – January 14, 2023
John passed away at Skagit Regional Health on Saturday, 01/14/23.
John was born to Knute and Gertrude (Rise) Mjoen, both Norwegian immigrants, in The Stanwood Hospital on 12/2/39. Graduated in 1958 from Twin City High School, he participated in
sports, band, and FFA.
He was a life long resident of Stanwood. He was raised in the Cedarhome area. John was an active participant in serving the Stanwood Community for many years.
He was a volunteer fireman for 36 years. He received his "EMT IV-Airway Technician certification
through Washington State. He received this certification through one of the first classes sponsored through Skagit
Valley Hospital taught by Dr. Ron Richeson. He was a "Golden" member of the Sons of Norway, a blood donor and member of the Gallon Club.
His home was one of the dispatch centers for the Stanwood Fire Department and Ambulance services before centralized 911 dispatch was created in the Stanwood area.
He was active in maintaining records for the Anderson Cemetery and the Lutheran Cemetery for many years. He also worked at Gilbertson Funeral Home for over 50 years.
John married Ethel Turk on October 21, 1961 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Stanwood. They have 2 daughters, Pam (Chuck) Eger of Burlington, Lori (Rick) Olson of Camano Island.
John enjoyed his time in Molson, Washington with family and extended family. The area his mothers family homesteaded when they immigrated from Oppdal, Norway.
He was an avid keeper of traditions such as: Pickled herring, Sild boll, smoked fish, Easter, thanksgiving and Christmas.
John is Survived by his wife of 61 years Ethel, daughters, Pam and Lori. Grandchildren, Hallie (Sean) Evans, Aaron (Kendra) Olson, Hannah (Austin) Miles, Sonja (Lance) Barnett.
Great grand Children, Clint and Vayda Evans, Oliver and Owen Olson, Wyatt Barnett, Clarice Miles. He is also survived by Brother in law and sister in law Dwane and Marge Turk and numerous
nieces and nephews, cousins in Western and Eastern Washington and in Norway. As well as many close and supportive friends in the Stanwood area.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Knute and Gertrude Mjoen, Sisters and bother in laws, Esther and Orville Hanson and Sylvia and Dean Sill.
A graveside service will be held for John at 1:00PM on Friday, January 20, 2023 at Anderson Cemetery in Stanwood.
