IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jim
Hendershot
July 1, 1929 – March 12, 2014
Jim Hendershot, 84, a resident of Stanwood, Washington, passed away on March 12, 2014, surrounded by loved ones. He was born July 1, 1929 in Wahpeton, North Dakota.
He spent his childhood in North Dakota and Minnesota before spending his teens in Everett and Stanwood. At age 15, Jim sought adventure and sailed the world in the Merchant Marines, returning to finish his Junior and Senior years at Twin City High in Stanwood. After graduating in 1950, he was drafted into the army and sent overseas to face action in the Korean War. Upon his return, Jim married Marion Lund, his high school sweetheart, in 1953 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Stanwood where he has served faithfully for these many years.
Jim was a 'jack of all trades', gaining experience at Smith Lumber Company on Camano Island, and Gilbertson Hardware and the foremost milk plant in Stanwood. In the late 1950's Jim ventured out on his own and started Jim's Sporting Goods, which transitioned into the Jim Dandy Ice Cream Parlor in the early 1970's. To this day, Jim Dandy's legendary clam chowder is still served at various civic and church functions.
Jim loved the sea and once his children were raised, he had the opportunity to return to a seafaring life. Jim worked for Foss Maritime until retirement in 1992.
Jim had a humble servant heart. He served on the Stanwood City Council during the consolidation of East and West Stanwood. He was also a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran church council.
Jim loved all the Pacific Northwest had to offer including hunting, fishing, clam digging and crabbing. He was a faithful supporter of Stanwood High School sports teams. His highest priorities were his love of God and his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Jim is survived by his son Keith (Mickey) of Grapevine, Texas; daughter Kathy (Mike) Beauchamp of Camano Island; grandchildren Mykell Beauchamp, Jordan Beauchamp, Meghan Lentz (Eric); brother Bill (Julie) Hendershot and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marion, parents Lee and Lillie Hendershot; sisters Virginia and Doris Ann.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, March 21 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Stanwood, with a Jim Dandy ice cream social to follow. Remembrances in the name of Jim may be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church building fund or the charity of your choice.
Jim will be interred next to Marion at the Scandinavian Cemetery, Stanwood.
Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
