Ilene Ingrid Hagen entered this world September 12, 1931. Born on the family farm overlooking Livingston Bay to parents Freda Soderstrom Hagen and Ole Pederson Hagen. They lived at Monaco Beach until Ole was tragically killed in a logging accident as he saved another worker. Ilene was only 8 years old when she, her mom, and her little brother, Donald, moved back to the family farm to live with her grandma and uncles. Times were hard but Ilene enjoyed growing up surrounded by her extended family; the Soderstroms, Sundins and Ajaxs.
When she was in high school, her mother married Ronald Lacktrup and they moved to Stanwood. Ilene loved walking to school and hanging out with friends. She also worked part time at the Ideal Theatre in Stanwood. At the start of her senior year they moved to the Lacktrup farm at Camano City. Although she hated moving so far from her friends she would grow to love the Lacktrup Home. This is the same home where she lived the last 25 years of her life.
Ilene graduated with the Twin City Cardinals class of 1949. For a graduation present she received an engagement ring from Walter Eugene Lund. A year later they were married and moved to Seattle where Gene had a job with Boeing. A year later, missing family and friends, they moved back. They eventually settled at Madrona Beach where Ilene lived for over 40 years. Ilene and Gene were active in the Sons and Daughters of Norway, the Madrona Beach fire station and the Camano Lutheran Church. Gene worked at Hamilton Lumber and Ilene worked at the telephone company. Their days were also happily filled with family get-togethers. Ilene was not part of the rapidly growing Lund family, which she would love and cherish for the rest of her life.
In 1960, Ilene was blessed with a son, David Eugene Lund. In 1962, Ilene was blessed with a daughter, Tami Ilene Lund. In 1968, Ilene was blessed with a second husband, Eugene Svensen. She also welcomed to the family Gene's daughter Charlotte Svensen. This started the next chapter of her life.
Living at Madrona Beach times were good. There were many years of adventures in the boat which took them fishing, clam digging, and smelting. And many loads of driftwood that Ilene made Gene haul home in the boat under protest. They made many lifelong friends of neighbors and the numerous weekend and summer people there at the beach. During this time Ilene worked several years at the Viking Village restaurant where she met many wonderful people. The family also enjoyed bowling together and playing cards. Sundays were often spent having dinner at her mom's and spending time with her brother, Don, and his family. There were also many enjoyable trips to Puget Island to visit the Svensen family. But some of their most memorable times were the Thanksgiving hunting trips to Metaline Falls. Ilene is remember for making Thanksgiving dinner in the cabin and inviting everyone over hunting that was from the Stanwood/Camano area. One year there were 22 hunters for Thanksgiving dinner. The Metaline Falls area is still a favorite hunting spot and home away from home for many.
Ilene also devoted many years caring for her mother and they enjoyed many a card and bingo game together. When her mom went to Josephine, that started her volunteering in the gift shop for many years. In the late 1960's, Ilene and her mother, Freda, and her daughter, Tami, started going to bingo together Saturday nights at the Camano Island Legion. There was always a seat in the front reserved with her name. Ilene was lucky at bingo that night.
In 1990, Ilene and Gene had moved to the Lacktrup family home where Ilene had lived as a teenager. After Gene's retirement from Twin City Foods, they enjoyed several years of trips to Reno and going to the local casinos. After Gene's passing in 2005, Ilene continued to enjoy trips to the casino with her friends until her back pain made it difficult.
Ilene's world was her family. She attended every event she possibly could for all her kids and grandkids. When she wasn't caring for her family, she was caring for her community, and in the late 1990's she was nominated as Woman of the Year for the Stanwood/Camano area.
She was a lifelong member of the Camano Lutheran Church. She was a Cub Scout leader for years, having started the first Den on Camano Island, and she was also involved in Camp Fire Girls. She was a member of the old bags of Arlington and Eagles Aerie #3041.
She greatly enjoyed spending over 20 years volunteering for the Stanwood Camano Food Bank with her many good friends.
But the majority of Ilene's time was spent dedicated to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 92, Stanwood. As a 45 year member, Ilene served in almost every Unit position including Past President. She spent years working for high school scholarships, Girls State, Poppies, and the Gold Star Mother programs to name a few. She spent several years as the District Girls State Chairman. She also supported Gene as he served positions in District and State, traveling to many different Legion Posts. One of the highlights of her Legion time was the honor of pinning new Department President, Dee Caughlin, at the State Convention in 2008 and being the Presidents Page in 2009. For years the Legion was extended family and home away from home.
Ilene was also a 30+ year member of Snohomish County Salon #736 of the 8/40. She also served most positions including Past President. She was currently serving as their Chaplain.
Consistency seemed to be a theme throughout Ilene's life. She was born on Camano and passed away in Stanwood. She lived in the same homes, went to the same Church, played bingo in the same place and married 2 men with the same name! Her life was consistent and so was her love. Her enormous love for her family. And the love they had for her. She was so proud of all her children, grandchildren, and her 2 recent great grandchildren and lived for the next time she would see them.
Ilene was released from her pain on February 11, 2015 with her children at her side.
She is preceded in death by her father Ole Hagen, mother Freda Soderstrom (Lacktrup), step father Ronald Lacktrup, and her husband Eugene Svensen. She leaves a daughter Tami Douglass and her husband Fred. Son David Lund and wife Jeanne. Step daughter Charlotte Greene and husband Roy. She also leaves 8 grandchildren Nicole Faghihi, Victor Greene (Leanne), Brendan Greene, Ashely (Adam) Douglass, Jessica (Karl) Lenz, Kayla Douglass, Jack Lund and Lauren Lund. And 2 great grandchildren Cooper Boelter and Carter Lenz.
Her love lives on in all of us.
