Obituary

Gregory Franklin Luce passed away on February 6th, 2023 at his home in Stanwood, WA.

Greg was born on February 28th, 1946 to Norman Franklin and Betty Rae Luce of Seattle, WA. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood, WA under the leadership of Pastor Crawford. He grew up very active - playing multiple sports and helping on the family farm. He graduated from Mountlake Terrace High School in 1964. The family would soon move to Stanwood WA, where he would meet his wife, Teresa.

They began dating after Teresa graduated and were married the next year at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanwood on April 20th, 1968. Over the next eighteen years, they would have three children - Brenda, Ben, and Danny. Greg followed in his father's footsteps by working at Boeing all his adult life. He had a strong work ethic. While working full time, Greg earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Western Washington University and Seattle University respectively. He retired in 2005 as a Procurement Cost Analysis Senior Manager, after 40 years of service to the company.

Greg cared for animals throughout his life. He helped his parents raise mink on a family farm in Lynnwood. There he worked many hours after school and on weekends. In addition, he had a special horse named Lucky, which he rode frequently for fun and in competitions. The pair successfully won many barrel racing events. In 1965 when the family relocated to Stanwood, WA, he and his parents raised Quarter Horses. They brought up numerous horses that won races at Yakima Downs, including champion racehorse Frosty's Deacon. The family switched once again to Thoroughbreds in the late 70's which Greg continued to raise until his death. This family business kept Greg very busy after working at Boeing. He spent many hours studying bloodlines and determining the best stallions to breed to his mares.

Greg's favorite hobby was fly fishing. He spoke often of trips down to Eastern Oregon with his brother, Jeff, where they would camp and fish numerous rivers and mountain lakes. He took his family back to Oregon every summer to visit those same waters. He loved going to Steens Mountain and Fish Lake, where it is said that he caught 333 fish in one day. He passed on his love of fishing to his sons, Danny and Ben, and his son-in-law, Mario.

While Greg was often quiet in public, he could talk for many hours with you about all sorts of hot button issues if you let him. He especially enjoyed someone who could handle his sense of humor and who would throw a barb back at him now and then. Later in life, he grew to show a love for his children and especially his grandchildren, doting over their achievements in a way only Greg would.

Greg is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Teresa; his sister, Trina Luce; his daughter, Brenda (Mario) Mendez of Stanwood, WA; his two sons, Benjamin (Kasey) Luce of Wilton, CT, and Daniel (Aubrey) Edwards-Luce of Hyattsville, MD; and his grandchildren Jimmy, Caroline, and Patrick Luce, Matthew and Thomas Mendez, and Braelyn Edwards-Luce.

A memorial service will be held at Camano Lutheran Church on February 25th at 1pm. He will be laid to rest on February 28th in Canyon City Cemetery, Canyon City, OR. This cemetery holds very special meaning to Greg. He has relatives dating back over 130 years buried there. Greg truly felt at peace in Eastern Oregon, wished to live there permanently, and will now peacefully rest in his beloved high desert.
