Gladys Quillen Wheeler, 81, of Stanwood, WA, took her journey home on a beautiful sunny day, the kind of day she loved, on May 7, 2015.
Mom, Grandma, G-G-Mom was born in Long Beach, CA on November 3, 1933, the only child of Hugh and Beulah Fick McKay. Born in the middle of the Great Depression, she was 9 when WWII began and a teenager when it ended. She rode horses with her beloved Grandfather all around the oil fields of Signal Hill. She loved Andy Hardy and Elvis. The movie theaters of the 1930's and 40's were her second home. Her teenage years were spent eating hamburgers and drinking Suicide cokes with her high school friends and first love, Dave. She loved to dance the Dirty Boogie. She always said she had lived through the best of times in America.
Born with an insatiable curiosity about everything. Even as she grew older, her curiosity never diminished and her computer opened a new world to her. She could investigate any interest of hers, look up old sayings, read biographies, watch how-to-do videos, but most of all, to watch again an old movie clip or hear a song from many years past.
Gladys Quillen Wheeler leaves behind her seven children, Hugh Edson McKay, Quillen Renee' Ely, Dawn Michelle McKay, Celene Roberts, Melanie Lee Lancaster, Stephanie Ann Gillum and Rex Rand Wheeler. She said her greatest accomplishment in her life was her children. She leaves her grandchildren, Pierre', Kia, Cari, Ben, Dylan, Devon, Shannon and Carly. A grandson, Jacob, preceded her in death. She was also blessed with 7 great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Jacob, Ben, Kylah, Waylon, Mason, Blake and a soon-to-be 8th, Grace. And her beloved aunt, only four years older than her and as close as a sister, Barby Edwards.
In spite of the last few months of her life having setbacks and feeling so sick, when asked about her life, she would say, "I've loved every minute of it!". And she had quite the life! She moved to the Stanwood area in 1977 and found her true happiness. The challenge of working her land was a passion she embraced, she loved raising her bantam chickens, swinging a hammer and creating everything from chicken coops to gardens. She never had a dull moment in her life!
Graveside services will be at the Anderson Cemetery in Stanwood, WA on May 16th, 2015 at 11 am.
