Gertrude Harter
Hammons
March 9, 1919 – October 6, 2023
Getrude, "Gert" Harter was born in Montana to Harry and Nina Harter. She was the only girl in a family of 6 brothers. The Harter family moved to Stanwood, Washington around 1921. She attended school in Stanwood until her junior year then moved to Nevada with her father for her Senior Year of High School. After graduation, While living in the southwest she met Gordon Hammons. In 1940 they married. She followed Gordon from Arizona to the Texas oil fields to Vallejo California where he worked in the ship yard, and their son Corky was born. Shortly after his birth, they moved back to Stanwood.
Gert worked a variety of jobs & positions in her lifetime, ranging from truck driving for local farmers to acting treasurer for the City of Mount Vernon.
Gert was always involved in many community events or projects.
She was a member of Freeborn Lutheran Church where she had been involved with Luther League and Freeborn Quilters.

Antiquing
Square Dancing
Genealogy
Baking wedding cakes & goods for other events.
Above all these interests was her love for her family, grandkids and great grandkids. She was always ready to help out if they needed a ride somewhere, bring them something that was forgotten, or caring for someone while a parent worked.
When Gert & Gordon retired they moved to Arizona where they spent 20 years enjoying the AZ sun, attending family reunions, working on the family history, & traveling either in their 5th wheel RV or on their Motorcycle.
In 2004 Gert & Gordon returned to Stanwood to be near family where they resided until Gordons passing in 2010.
In 2016 at the age of 97 Gert moved to Alaska to live with her son until her passing in 2023 at the age of 104.
While in Alaska Gert helped the St. Johns Lutheran Church Quilters make quilts for charity and volunteered at the local Senior Center.
Gert was preceded in death by her husband Gordon, her parents, Harry & Nina Harter and 6 brothers. She is survived by her son, 3 grandchildren and their spouses along with 5 great grandchildren
