Gary K. Engebretsen, 78, died March 23, 2023, in Stanwood, WA. He was born July 9, 1944, in Arlington, WA. Son of Wesley and Elsie (Vognild) Engebretsen, he was educated in the Stanwood School System and graduated from Twin City High School in 1962. As a young man, Gary worked on the family farm, various neighboring farms and at Twin City Foods. In February of 1966, he was drafted into the Marine Corps and proudly served in Vietnam for two years. He received numerous decorations for his service including a Purple Heart Medal. Gary went on to work for Standard Oil/Chevron, where he managed service stations. His final station was in Sedro Woolley, WA. where he was Owner/Operator of Gateway Chevron, which he ran for many years. He finished out his working career with a short stint at Burlington Northern Railroad before retiring.
Gary was an accomplished hunter and traveled all over the world to hunt. He holds many records that are documented in Boone & Crockett, and Safari record books. His happy place was the outdoors and hunting. He was a dog lover and had many over the years.
Gary is proceeded in death by his son Todd Engebretsen. He leaves behind his daughter Mysty (Paul) Schmidt. Grandchildren: Christopher (Ashley) Wood, Katee (Brenen) Wood, Wesley (Stefanie) Wood. Great grandchildren: Lexi, Ryker, Lacy, Easton, Annabelle and Cheyanne. Sister Maxine Osborne. As well as many special people along the way.
A graveside service, with Military Honors, will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 11:00 am, at Zion Lutheran Cemetery (Little White Church on the Hill) in Silvana, WA.
A reception immediately following the graveside service will be held at the Stanwood Eagles Club (6419 Pioneer Hwy).
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to a veterans organization of your choice.
A special thank you to the staff at Brookdale Stanwood for the caring and compassionate care they showed for Gary while he lived there.
