Fred John
Miller
September 2, 1932 – February 20, 2018
Fred J Miller passed away peacefully in his home on Fir Island around Ten o'clock Feb 20, 2018. Born Sept 2 nd 1932. Like most members of Fred's generation "the greatest generation" everyone was expected to work hard. Fred worked the family farm and played football at Stanwood HS in the 1950's. He served our country by joining the ARMY, stationed in Korea. He left a week after marrying Sonja Ranes, his wife of 54 years. Fred experienced different jobs. He chanced everything to fish Alaska in 1970's. He and his son (Brian) fished the rough water of Bristol Bay Alaska. One of Fred's greatest passions was fishing. He towed a float from Everett and parked it right under the Conway bridge for many years. Fred enjoyed their beach cabin on Camano Island. It was a chance to show his kids and grandchildren how to rake smelt, dig clams and set crab pots. Besides being a Husky fan. Fred loved reading history and non-fiction books. Another favorite pastime was watching movies from the 40's & 50's. Fred's great passion was to smoke salmon in the smoking house he built. Fred was generous sharing this salmon with friends and relatives. In later years Fred loved motor homing to Arizona. Fred was a member of the Sons of Norway Able Lodge #20 and 58 years in the American Legion Post Mason-McConkey post #147. Freddie John Miller is survived by brother Al Miller and his wife Margaret of Marysville and 3 children, Jane Miller, Brian and wife Mary Miller and Randi and Husband Von "Dallas" Gigrigh. Grandchildren include Ranee', Jessica (passed) and Brelan all of Seattle and Lisa and Michelle Miller of Mount Vernon. Great-grandchildren include, Rochelle, Jessie and Brett of Seattle and Christina ,Justin and Paislee of Mount Vernon. A memorial service to celebrate Fred's life will be held at Fir-Conway Lutheran Church (18101 Fir Island Rd, Mt Vernon, WA 98273) on March 3 rd at 11am.
