IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris Elizabeth
Weiland
February 23, 1931 – April 4, 2019
Doris ("Dodie") Elizabeth Weiland of Stanwood, Washington passed away on Thursday,
April 4, 2019 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bellingham,Washington at the age of 88.
Dodie was born on February 23, 1931 in Logansport, Indiana to the late Asa and Helen Plummer. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 64 years, Don Weiland, and their infant son, Daniel. She is survived by her sister, June Siemens; her brother, Angus Plummer; four of her children and their spouses: Darrell (and Robin) Weiland; Denise (and David) Keyes; David (and Lisa) Weiland; Diane (and Arne) Wennerberg; as well as 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
She grew up during the Great Depression, and her family moved a lot as her father sought work. They left Indiana when Dodie was five years old and moved to California where they lived in numerous towns across the state. They were living in Southern California during WWII and Dodie remembered watching anti-aircraft fire through a skylight during blackouts. After the war, the family moved north to Carlotta, California where Dodie attended and graduated from Fortuna High School. Following another job opportunity the family moved to Redondo Beach, California where Dodie met the love of her life, Don Weiland, while attending church at North Redondo Chapel. They married on January 30, 1954. In a little under 2 years, their first son was born, Darrell, then three more children rapidly followed…Daniel (who died shortly after birth), Denise and David. Nine years later, Diane was born.
Dodie was a very energetic and adventurous woman. With three children ages five and under, Don and Dodie took a ship to Brazil and moved to the jungle where they worked as lay-missionaries along with Dodie's parents and brother who were running an orphanage. Besides raising their own three children, Dodie worked with the Brazilian women, delivering babies, helping the sick and being a friend; showing them what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. After a couple years, they needed to return to the States along with Dodie's parents.
Upon returning to the United States, Dodie continued her life of serving others. Don and Dodie led a youth ministry called "Jet Cadets" at North Redondo Chapel. Later she was a deaconess at Huntington Beach Evangelical Free Church and after moving to Mount Hermon she helped out at the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center. After Don retired, they moved to Washington, where she volunteered at Warm Beach Camp, painting backgrounds for their Lights of Christmas or sewing costumes for the Dickens carolers. At Cedarhome Baptist Church in Stanwood, WA, she helped with the AWANA ministry, AWANA Camps, Bible Quiz meets, the AWANA Olympics and Leadership Conferences. She was also part of a sewing group that made clothes for children in war-torn countries or victims of natural disasters. Though Don was the more recognized Bible teacher, Dodie also studied the Bible and mentored women of all ages. She was the perfect complement to Don, providing a welcoming environment for people to come to ask questions and learn about God and the Bible.
Dodie was an artist, whether in painting a picture or decorating her home. She had a good eye for color and arrangement. She also liked change, so she periodically rearranged the furniture.
She was the consummate hostess, always ready to have company whether for an hour or a week. The cookie jar was always full, and the tea kettle ready. She LOVED tea parties, and wearing cute hats. She enjoyed playing games of all kinds, putting together puzzles, and going for drives.
She loved her friends and family and prayed for each of them on a daily basis. Her strength was not just in her personality, but in the God she worshipped.
In the Bible, Proverbs 31 describes a woman with the character qualities of someone who is industrious, generous, prepared, has a good reputation and who "fears the LORD", which means a person who loves God and tries to obey Him. The verses go on to say that "her children rise up and bless her." We, the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Don and Dodie Weiland do "rise up and bless" them and are grateful for the impact they have had on our lives.
A memorial service will be held to honor Dodie Weiland on May 25, 2019 at 1 p.m. at Cedarhome Baptist Church, 29000 68th Avenue NW, Stanwood Washington 98292.
