Obituary

Clifton Lee Peightal

October 17, 1927 - July 14, 2018

Clifton Peightal (Cliff) passed away on July 14, 2018 at the age of 90.  He is greatly loved by his wife of 65 years, Arlene, his four children Lisa, David, Karen and Stephen and his son-in-law Hugo.  Also surviving are three grandchildren and one great grandson, Cliff's brother Perry and sister-in-law Patricia, and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Cliff was born in Lodi, California on October 17, 1927 to Kenneth and Myrtie Peightal, one of four sons growing up in Lodi during The Great Depression.  After graduating from high school, he joined and served in the U.S. Navy (1945-48).  Upon graduation from Northwest Christian College in Eugene, OR, he and Arlene were married in 1952.  Cliff also earned a Master of Divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary and a Master of Social Work from the University of Washington.

He was ordained a minister at the Lodi Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1952.  Cliff served as minister and interim minister to many churches and communities in Washington, Oregon, Montana, California, Indiana, Iowa and Hawaii.  He loved the people he worked with and made life-long friends wherever he went.  He was especially honored to have worked with and ministered to the people of the Yakama Indian Nation in the early years of his career.  Cliff also worked as a social worker, working with youth as well as senior citizens.  He served as administrator to 3 different senior housing facilities in California and Oregon, including the Olive Plaza Senior Living community in Eugene.

Cliff enjoyed music.  From Bach to Blue Grass, and Concertos to Country, he had a deep love for music.  He loved to sing in church choirs as well as blue grass bands but was most joyous after listening to church organists perform Bach.

A scholar, storyteller and preacher, he loved theology, history and geography as well as good jokes.  College football was a passion.  (Go Huskies!  Go Ducks!)  Stamp and coin collecting were an adventure.  Bird watching was an inspiration.  The outdoors was a special place.  He was a disciplined walker and even at age 90 kept up his daily routine of walking 2-1/2 miles.

Cliff loved his family, his friends, his Lord and the freedoms afforded to us by his country.  He gave generously of himself and his spirit when he knew there could be no recognition or reward.  He gracefully faced the challenges of his final illness with bravery, determination and faith.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the Camano Center (606 Arrowhead Rd, Camano Island, WA).  A buffet lunch will follow.  All family and friends are invited!
