Obituary

Bernice Lillian Vogel (Bea) passed away peacefully from cancer on January 23, 2021 in Seattle, Washington. She had been a resident of Merrill Gardens in Ballard and Queen Anne as well as Quail Park in Lynnwood. Bea was an active member of these communities and enjoyed her time spent with friends and caregivers.

Bernice was born on August 28, 1927 in Lake City, Colorado a small mining town in the San Juan mountains. She was the youngest of 3 children born to her parents Lillian (Griffiths) and John Rawson. Her father, a miner, died from tuberculosis when she was 3 years of age. Her mother became co-owner of the local telephone company and the family lived in the back of the office on Main street. Bea attended the four-room Lake City School and was the sole graduate in May 1945. Following graduation, the family moved to Seattle to be reunited with Bea's brother, Harold Rawson who had been discharged at the end of the war. She and her sister went to work for the telephone company and enjoyed the new social opportunities available to them in the city. She purchased her first car, a new two-toned '56 Chevy Bel-Air. Bea met her husband, Willard L. Vogel during a telephone company cruise on the historic Virginia V steamer. Willard (Bill) was a graduate of Twin City High School in Stanwood (class of '47). After a very brief courtship, the couple were married on November 16, 1957 in Seattle. They immediately relocated to Northern California where they spent their early marriage in Petaluma before moving to their second home in Redwood Valley.

Bea was the proud mother of two daughters, Leslie and Varlaine (Laney). She kept busy supporting her daughters through the PTA, Girl Scouts, 4-H and band. She also enjoyed bowling, knitting, and gardening. After Bill retired, they 'sold up' to become full time RV'ers and travelled to every state and throughout Canada. Sadly, their travels came to an end in 1991 with the death of her husband. She then moved back to Seattle to be closer to her daughters. She would continue to spend her winters with friends at the Indio Springs Resort in California. Bea enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and friends.

Bea was preceded in death by her parents Lillian and John Rawson, her sister Waunita Rawson and her brother Harold Rawson. She is survived by her daughters Leslie Vogel (friend Paul Feuerpfeil) of Seattle and Laney Gale (husband Mark Mazeski) of Olympia. Bea will be buried alongside her husband and sister in Anderson Cemetery, Stanwood Washington. Memorial contributions can be made to the Steamer Virginia V Foundation.
