Ann Lowell, age 91, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 30, 1934, in Newton, Massachusetts, Ann was the daughter of the late Lillian (Sleath) Hitchcock and Wooster K. Hitchcock. A graduate of New Britain High School, she spent most of her life in Connecticut, where she was a dedicated Girl Scout leader in New Milford CT. and a longtime member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 1672. Ann worked for many years as a bank teller, though her true passions were found outside the office.
An avid reader her entire life, Ann was rarely without a book. During her "empty nest" years in Sherman, CT, she and her late husband, Douglas, found great joy in raising AKC championship Keeshonds, a pursuit that allowed them to travel throughout much of the United States.
Known affectionately as “Grandma the Great” by her youngest descendants, Ann’s greatest legacy is her expansive family. She is survived by her daughters: Susan G. Kidd (Walter) of Camano Island WA; Beth E. Peck (Edward) of Knoxville, TN; and Lynn E. Lowell (Alan Galletto) of Holmes Beach, FL.
She leaves behind ten grandchildren: Lauren Lowell and Gabriella Maselli; Christopher Jennings (Sarah) and Cynthia Phipps (Ian); Matthew Peck, Meghan Peck and Kelsey Oliver (Mathew); Christina Bankuty (James Tanski), Nichola Bankuty (Victor Figueroa), and Geza Bankuty (Colleen). She was also the proud great-grandmother of 20: Briane, Layla, Austin, Noah, Paul, Destiny, Melody, Alexis, Micah, Kallen, Doriana, Jackson, Wyatt, Scarlett, Marcellus, Henry, Sophia, Elijah, Penelope, and Elise. She is also survived by many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Ann was predeceased by her husband, Douglas A. Lowell; her daughter, Terri Ann Lowell (Evelyn Maselli); and her sister, Marjorie Gaffney (Robert).
The family is deeply grateful that Ann was able to know, love, and spend precious time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, regardless of the distance between them. Her voice and her presence will be profoundly missed, but she will always hold a special place in the hearts of those she touched.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in Connecticut at a later date. In honor of Ann’s lifelong passion for literacy, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her memory to the library of your choice.
Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood, WA is in charge of arrangements.
