IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alexander J
Semritc
September 11, 1949 – December 24, 2022
Alexander James Semritc, 73, of Mount Vernon, Washington passed away on December 24, 2022. Al was born and raised by his parents John and Sophie Semritc in Cleveland, Ohio. After high school, he was drafted and served in the US Navy. During his military service, he was given the opportunity to attend college at the University of Washington, where he earned his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and met his wife, Debbie Semritc (nee Anderson), while working as a cook at her sorority. After graduation, Debbie and Al moved around the country on various assignments from the Navy with stops including San Diego, Phoenix, Newport (RI), and Portland (OR) during which time they raised three children. After retirement, Al and family moved to American Samoa briefly for a job opportunity where the family experienced a very different way of living.
He also loved traveling, and during his life, he visited four continents for both work and pleasure. Cooking was also a passion, and Al enjoyed whipping up many "creative" meals as well family "classics" pierogies, kolachky and noodles and cottage cheese.
Above all, Al delighted in taking care of his family. He was known to be ready and willing to immediately help anyone in need. He would literally, drop everything to help his family on a moments notice. When your car broke down on Stevens Pass, when you needed emergency childcare and were four hours away, when your sports team needed a coach, when you ran out of money in Hawaii, when you needed a ride to work, he was always there.
He was also an avid sports fan and loved following his kids sporting events as well as the family's beloved Washington Huskies. Al got to see the Huskies play in the Rose Bowl, watched the Sonics win it all in 1979, and got to see the Final Four of the NCAA basketball tournament.
Al leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 44 years Debbie, father-in-law Dennis Anderson (Shirley), children Ryan (Rosie), Matthew (Amy), Sara (Guy), sister Sue, and five grandchildren. Al was preceded in death by his parents Sophie and John, and his brother David.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to woundedwarriorproject.org. In accordance with his wishes, Al will receive a naval burial at sea.
